How to get to Boracay

Boracay, although a major tourist destination in Aklan, is not directly accessible via air travel. Domestic and international flights to Kalibo International Airport (KLIA) and domestic flights to Godofredo P. Ramos Airport (Caticlan Airport) operate on a daily basis. From Manila, the flight to Kalibo or Caticlan takes 1 hour. Caticlan is the nearer jump-off point to Boracay Island, which is reached via boat or ferry. From Manila, land travel to Kalibo takes 25 hours. The seaport where the ferry will dock is in Roxas City, Capiz.

Flights to Caticlan get delayed very often. Citibank offers travel insurance for Boracay in case of delayed flights by a minimum of 6 hours.

Best time to travel

The Ati-Atihan Festival is an annual feast in Kalibo held in honor of the Sto. Niño (child Jesus). The festival concludes on the third Sunday of January. The Ati-Atihan Festival is characterized by tribal dance, indigenous costumes and street party depicting the Atis, who are considered to be the earliest settlers of the island. Don’t forget your policy from your travel insurance Boracay as a proof.

Getting around Boracay

Transportation within Boracay Beach is mostly tricycles which can be rented for island trips. Tourists can also rent mountain bikes and motorcycles. Habal-habal rides (single passenger motorcycle) are also a popular mode of transport. Take note however that motorcycles are not allowed to pass by the White Beach. A paraw, or narrow hulled boat with outriggers, can be rented for sunset sailing and island-hopping.

Where to eat in Boracay

Because of White Beach’s popularity, there are a handful of artisanal cafés and restaurants in Boracay that prospered within the island. Here’s my Boracay guide to the best: Real Coffee & Tea Café are famous for their calamansi (lime) muffins served on a nipa hut in front of the beach. Seafood at D’Talipapa is a wet market to purchase freshly-caught and inexpensive seafood which you can bring to a restaurant to cook. For Spanish cuisine such as paella and lengua, visit the homegrown restaurant, Dos Mestizos. Ask your travel agency for more tips and tricks.

What to pack

Boracay is literally the island life, but don’t even think about under-dressing in paradise! Even in your bikinis and swimsuits, always wear your best. Carry sufficient money in cash and have an emergency fund should you find interesting out-of-budget activities, food or souvenirs that you want to buy. Finally, don’t forget to secure your items by using bag locks for increased security.

For a minimum fee, you can get travel insurance Boracay to allow you to reimburse your flight due to trip cancellation, expenses incurred for buying emergency clothing due to baggage loss or even hospital expenses from personal injury.
